VST STANDS FOR
VIRTUAL STUDIO TECHNOLOGY

Virtual Studio Technology(VST) is an audio plug-in software interface that integrates software synthesizers and effects units into digital audio workstations. VST and similar technologies use digital signal processing to simulate traditional recording studio hardware in software.

The plugins are great for sound designers and mix engineer who want to employ some creative texturizing and psychoacoustics to their sound. The Celestial Buss Processor provides a welcome layer of analog richness to single tracks as well as full mixes. The Dimension and Texture controls are where it’s at! Try for yourself, because Celestial is free until February 14. What are you waiting for? Check out the official demo to see and hear Celestial in action.

Acustica Audio is well known for developing high quality emulations of real hardware, but the latest offering came out of left field… The Celestial Buss Processor comes in two plugins two-plugin mixing suite, consisting of the Texture Mix Processor and a Psychoacoustic Buss Processor. It seems that the plugin is loosely based on the recently released Fusion stereo buss  processor by Solid State Logic. The software is compatible with all VST, VST3, AU, and AAX plugin hosts on PC and Mac.

ChordPotion is a composition and performance tool. It can turn any chord progression into new riffs and melodies instantly! The basic concept is simple: You play your chords in your DAW, send them to ChordPotion, and ChordPotion generates new notes for you that are played on your favorite synth. You can also export the generated notes as standard MIDI files and edit them later on.

The plug-in contains four parallel sequencers. You can create and edit your own sequences from scratch or load one of the many factory patterns to build your own chord transformers.

Cableguy’s new CrushShaper plug-in is not your average bitcrusher. It comes with a multiband enhancer and vintage Lo-Fi effects. Just like the other components in Shaperbox 2, it’s driven by freely drawable LFOs and flexible envelope followers, so it’s easy to come up with unique distortion patterns and downsampled grooves in seconds.

CrushShaper offers 3 different Bitcrush styles:

  • Crunchgives you fuzz, grind and grit
  • Bitsreduces the audio resolution to lovely 8-bit sound and below
  • Resampleis for introducing digital overtones and lo-fi retro sound

Each style can be animated with the built-in LFO and envelope follower, as well as filtered, layered and mixed with the original sound. CrushShaper is the perfect tool for creating crisp lo-fi melodies and retro video game FX alike. There are many great presets, that you can use as is or use as starting off point for further exploration.

CrushShaper is available for PC and Mac. It runs in the new ShaperBox 2 multi-effect plugin, so you can buy CrushShaper alone or as part of the ShaperBox 2 bundle. Good news for those of us, who already own the ShaperBox 2 bundle: CrushShaper is free of charge! Everyone else can grab it from Plugin Boutique for $44 USD.

Accusonus released a new AI-based plug-in for electronic musicians, producers and DJs. Accusonus Rhythmiq allows you to re-shape your loops in real time and improvise with them while performing live. It’s like that cool producer friend, who takes what you came up with and plays around with it.

What sets Rhythmiq apart is, that it analyzes and understands your beats (for the most part) and instantly allows you to create new variations of it. All you need is turn one knob – which is midi mappable – and you can generate pattern variations, for instantly playable breaks, fills and build-ups. When producing, there’s so much to control – you don’t want another plugin with a hundred different buttons. Sometimes it’s great that you can make spontaneous decisions and stay in the flow. When you enable the A.I. Beat Assistant and let it perform in real-time, it’s not completely random though! Obviously you can tell it how much variability you want for arrangement, silence or reverses.

The whole layout is pretty straightforward, so after I checked out the presets, it was time to explore…

Instant Game Over!

Let’s drop classic drum breaks into Accusonus Rhythmiq. How about the Amen Break? Let’s tweak a few of the parameters in the beat assistant and hit play. You instantly have a recognizable but unique and evolving sound bed for your next Jungle or Drum’n’Bass track! No more micro-chopping breaks or trying to filter out the kick, so you can use the break as a top layer. Simply load it into Rhythmiq, let it process the break to extract stems and tweak the beat assistant to your liking.

Spitfire Audio is offering their new BBC Symphony Orchestra Discover VST as a free download. Only catch is that you have to fill out a questionnaire on their website. A new tactic I haven’t seen before is, that they make you wait if you want it for free, which I think is fair enough, considering the quality that Spitfire Audio regularly releases. Once you complete the questionnaire, you have to wait fourteen days for the delivery of the download link.

BBC Symphony Orchestra Discover is Spitfire’s super-affordable orchestra VST. It is based on the same recordings that are used for their BBC Symphony Orchestra Professional library, which costs a whopping $999 and most likely not something you really need for your beats. Amazingly BBC Symphony Orchestra Discover comes in at around 200 MB while containing 35 instruments with 47 articulations and one mixed-signal patch!

Here is an excellent selection of free VST’s.

Many of these rival the commercial paid for alternatives

Below is a list of 16 VST’s available for FREE.

Just click the word FREE that is next to each VST’S name.

This will bring you to the VST’S OFFICIAL PAGE

  1.

    Brainworx bx_subfilter. Free.

With the bx_subfilter you can achieve more clarity and definition of the bass range in just a few steps. This useful effect makes it obsolete to manually correct bass tones using an equalizer.

  2.

    d16 Frontier. Free.

The Adaptive Limiter d16 Frontier is one of our favourite free VST plugins makes individual tracks, groups or complete mixes sounds larger than life. Threshold, release time and the output gain can be individually adjusted. Best thing: The automatic make-up gain reliably protects against clipping and hard limiting!

    3.

    Valhalla Freq Echo. Free.

Frequency shifters and their metallic sound character are a guarantee for fresh sounds. The Valhalla Freq Echo combines a frequency shifter and a characterful emulation of an analog delay capable of turning vanilla piano sounds into vibrant drones, simple synth sounds into warbling textures and the human voice into extraterrestrial sounds.

    4.

    Melda Production MAutoPitch. Free.

MAutoPitch is a great free alternative to Auto-Tune & Co. It is part of the MFreeEffectsBundle, a 27-pack plug-in collection of studio and creative effects, providing flexible intonation correction in real time.

    5.

    Tokyo Dawn Records NOVA. Free.

TDR NOVA can be used not only as a parametric or dynamic EQ, but also as a multi-band, wideband or frequency-selective compressor. With its musical sound and flexible configuration options, it is a real secret weapon for mix and mastering!

    6.

Audio Damage Rough Rider 2. Free.

Pumping effect compression is the specialty of Rough Rider. Exactly the right thing to give drums and other rhythmic signals as well as basses more assertiveness. Drastic settings provide a striking as well as musical saturation.

    7.

    Slate Digital The Monster. Free.

The supercharger for massive drums and basslines. With strong effect compression, the transients of a signal are mercilessly smoothed out. Activate Punch to bring it back – ideal for drums and other rhythmic audio. The Monster also replicates the iconic all-button mode of the cult compressor / limiter

    8.

    Mono/Fury. Free.

It’s not hard to guess that the synth emulated here is Korg’s classic Mono/Poly. This emulation delivers crisp basses, screaming leads, and sparkling arpeggios – just like the original hardwa

    9.

    Togu Audio Line TAL-NoiseMaker Free.

TAL-NoiseMaker is a great virtual-analog synth with intuitive interface. Be sure to try the different filter modes of the powerful multimode filter. Another highlight is the Envelope Editor, where you can draw your own waveform. This can be used to control various parameters such as the filter frequency, making it a modulation monster.

    10.

    Futurcraft Kairatune. Free.

Bass and lead synthesizer geared to fast workflow, all functions are directly accessible. The sound generator consists only of an oscillator with sub-oscillator, but thanks to MASS and SPREAD, it can easily be turned into a supersaw or -square and stretched out in width.

    11.

    discoDSP OB-Xd. Free.

The polyphonic Oberheim OB-X is known for its warm, wide and very lively sound. OBXD captures the charismatic sound character of the analog classic from 1979 and also offers useful additional functions such as a multimode filter.

    12.

    u-he Tyrell Nexus 6. Free.

The Tyrell was inspired by Roland’s Juno 60, but its tonal possibilities go far beyond the hardware model. Analogue standards are provided by the synth in excellent audio quality, and thanks to Osc sync and cross and ring modulation, even aggressive and metallic sounds are child’s play.

    13.

    Martin Lüders PG-8X. Free.

The PG-8X emulates Roland’s 6-voice analog synth JX-8P from 1985. A great sound, which captures the typical Roland sound character very well – PG-8X is easily placed in our top ten best freeware synthesizers.

    14.

    E-PHONIC DRUMATIC 3. Free.

Drumsynths usually sound thinner than drumsamplers, but they offer the much more dynamic sound. With Drumatic you get a complete synthetic kit with six drums, which is not only suitable for electro, but can enrich any electronic music style with a very own touch.

    15.

    Free VST Plugin – Instruments

Ample Sound AGM Lite 2. Free.

Here’s a virtual guitar VST which brings the rich sound of the Martin D-41 guitar with numerous articulations into your virtual studio. You can adjust sound parameters such as the microphone levels, pan position, and stereo width, as well as activate the artificial doubling function. The strummer page, where you can program your own rhythm patterns and chord progressions, is particularly exciting!

    16.

    PLOGUE ALTER EGO. Free.

Although virtual singers have been around for quite some time, dealing with the tools is usually cryptic. Not so with alter ego: Simply enter text and play MIDI notes and the synth starts singing.
